Eight branches stem from a central image of a man carrying an unidentified box up a staircase made of books. (Don’t try making one at home!) He is smiling – is he happy or does he wear a devious grin?

Branch one shows ivy reaching into the distance – what might it symbolise?

Branch two is circled by a chain – in safety or confinement – what else might the chain signify?

Branch three sports a happy/sad emblem – theatrical or real?

Branch four holds a goldfish in a bowl – a pet or a representational image?

Branch five shows boxes, one contains eyes – what is it? Why is it there? What else is in the boxes?

Branch six has a net hanging like a hammock full of thought bubbles – what might they represent? Are they thoughts or something else?

Branch seven has a snake reeling and coiling around it – fake or real? What might it mean?

Branch eight is speared by a magic wand – only is it really magic – there is a label attached – what could that mean?

There are 13 links in the chain and 13 books forming the stairs – is it significant? What other connections can you see?

Your mystery mind map challenge. Can you devise a real or fictional mind map from this central image and the intriguing branches? What might your theme be? What might you call your mind map? What 8 starter keywords would you add to the branches? Can you rise to the challenge using your imagination and creativity? Can you complete the mystery mind map challenge?

If you are a mind map trainer or classroom teacher feel free to use this mind map as a study challenge exercise.

Spurred on by a competition and challenge back in 2008 I created a mind map exploring the subject of “Exponential growth in the number of people mind mapping”. The competition highlighted many excellent ideas for getting the word out about using mind maps. (See my original Exponential Growth Mind Map and more about the original competition)

Now, in 2011 I have decided to consider Mind Map Firsts; potential new avenues for helping further widespread popularity for mind mapping. I’ve identified ten ideas, perhaps some more viable, or practical, than others

Here is what I came up with:

Who will be the first pavement artist to create an outdoor mind map?
Who will be the first celebrity to share online a mind map they have created?
Who will be the first to have a colourful and artistic mind map published in a magazine or in the media?
Who will be the first to create a mind map DVD?
Who will be the first to create a structured mind map format for conflict resolution?
Who will be the first to have published a book celebrating artistic mind maps?
Who will be the first to create a permanent colourful mind map mural?
Who will be the first to create a mind map story – a book in images only?
Who will be the first to create a mind map solution finding hit squad dedicated to problem solving?

Mind Map Firsts – might you be the first to explore any of the above avenues?
What other ways to spread knowledge of mind mapping can you think of?

If you fancy a challenge try creating a mind map with the opposite hand. Unless you are ambidextrous this is quite a test for mind, eye and hand co-ordination!

You can alternate which hand you start with.

The test is a great indication of how brilliant ours brains are, how we learn and how we perfect skills.

No need to stop at drawing; try other tasks such as stirring your drink or brushing your teeth.

Try discovering the most complex task that you can undertake using your opposite hand to the one you would normally use.

Mind Maps can work well as desk cards; such as postcard size or A5 – either create a small mind map or scale down existing larger mind maps.

You can use the desk size mind maps as motivational cards, or trigger points for regular work. You could also use single branches.

Perhaps frame the mini mind map in a clear photograph frame so that it can stand on your desk.

You might choose a different weekly or monthly theme, or use the mini mind map as a learning tool for daily viewing and recall. Having studied the original you can replicate the mind map from scratch to test yourself.

Printing four to a page will save ink and paper. Most mind maps reduce well and can shrink down with minimal loss of detail – printing two mind maps to a page works well for this idea and also for filing purposes.
